I am a sinner, now repented. I've only had my road bike for 3 weeks and have worked myself up from a 7 mile circuit to 24 miles this morning. I (now) only have immense respect for the Tour. It's never been something that I've 'got'.

In all sports I'm fairly certain we can see ourselves taking part, and perhaps just about getting away with looking professional for a fleeting moment. In rugby, I could scrum or throw a ball as good as a pro. In golf, I could down a decent put. In football, I could cross a ball. In cycling...forget it. From the moment they get on the bike the amateur is lost. From cadence (ooh, get me, 3 weeks in and I'm an expert) to speed on the flat or up hills. I'm not going to compete.

And that's the difference. You can't fake it. You're totally exposed. There's no where to hide and no one else to help you. And what's more, it's quite good fun.
